Kale Starbird

Kale Starbird

Kale learned to paint fine art in 1977 while at California State University Dominguez Hills.  She has gone on to earn her living as a Sign Painter in Ojai, CA until she retired in 2009.

It all started when...
as a young person, our family had a pastel portrait of my maternal grandma rendered in 1897 when she was 17 years old.  There is a tin form beneath the painting in the area of her head and lace collar giving the portrait a slightly 3 demential shape under the glass.
A light bulb went off when I was offered the chance to take a class in pastel. I found that it opened a new world for me in art since my previous training in college was oil painting.

I have been a student of Bert Collins since 1992. Since then Pastels have brought such joy to my life in the form of landscapes, portraits and still life painting. The joy comes from experimenting with bold color and value.  Bert’s gracious teaching has been my inspiration over the years.
